Frequently Asked Veterinary Questions & Answers

Why does my dog scoot?

It’s true that worms can also cause scooting in dogs, but it isn’t the most common reason for scooting. In most cases, scooting in canines is associated with anal gland problems. Anal glands are balloon-like sacs located on both sides of the anus. They produce a secretion with the dog’s special scent, which is expelled when the dog defecates. However, allergies and other factors can cause inflammation of the anal glands, leading to fluid buildup, infection, and in some cases even an abscess. Dogs scoot to relieve the pain caused by the pressure of all the fluid trapped in the glands.

Can I give my pet aspirin?

Cats should never be given aspirin unless directed by your vet, as they do not tolerate the drug very well. Dogs, on the other hand, usually do okay with aspirin. However, you should consult your vet before giving your dog aspirin and ask for an accurate dose. It’s also important to know that aspirin can cause side effects, such as ulcers, bleeding, and gastrointestinal problems if used long-term. If your dog is suffering from chronic pain, ask your vet about safer alternatives.

How do I know if my pet has worms?

The best way to check if your pet has worms is to have a fecal analysis done. You’ll need to take a fresh fecal sample the size of your thumb in to your vet’s office to be sent to a laboratory. There, a laboratory technician will check the sample under the microscope for worms as well as other parasites and eggs. Results usually come in the next day.

Can dogs get worms from human food?

Contaminated human food can cause a worm infection in dogs. However, most of the time, the worms are transmitted because the food is fed on the ground, which is infected with eggs. Dogs with worms continue the life cycle as they pass worms through the stool and into the environment.FAQ

Why does my puppy eat poop?

Puppies and dogs in general eat poop either because they like the taste or it’s just a bad habit. This behavioral problem can be treated by mixing a special powder into all of your pet’s food. The powder will make the stool taste bitter and hopefully make your dog dislike eating poop. You can find the powder in most pet stores and veterinary clinics.

Why do dogs eat grass?

Some experts believe that dogs eat grass for two reasons: One, because they enjoy the taste and it’s the closest plant source to them, and two, it’s a natural remedy dogs use for gastrointestinal problems. Whatever the reason, it’s safe for your dog to eat grass as long as he’s fully vaccinated and under direct supervision.

Is it safe to feed my dog bones?
